Old Dog, New Tricks

“So, where are the buttons?” Duncan asked, carefully examining every facet of the sleek black rectangle in his palm. Methos rolled his eyes and snatched the device from the Scot.

“There aren’t any. It’s touch screen,” he replied and demonstrated by opening a book and then turning the pages with one finger.

Duncan looked agog.

“For heaven’s sake, Duncan, you’ve got that iPod I got you last Christmas. The principle is the same, just for books!”

Duncan just nodded mutely. He couldn’t bring himself to admit that the player was still in a drawer somewhere, battery dead and the only songs on it the ones that Methos had loaded before giving it to him.

“Honestly, you’re such a Luddite sometimes,” Methos said and raised the corner of his mouth in amusement.

“I was not! I was completely in favour of mechanising the mills.”

Methos scrutinised him for a moment and Duncan guessed he was trying to decide whether he was joking or not.

“Things have moved on and now you can carry an entire library in your pocket. If you can learn to use this,” Methos said, thrusting the reader under Duncan’s nose for emphasis. “This is the future, Mac. Think of the Padd in Star Trek,” he added.

Duncan sighed.

“Fine, show me again…”

Of course Methos pwns Duncan in adapting.

Loved it.

Adapt or die and we all know which Methos would choose ;-)

LOL

I was picturing the Sony Reader Touch when I wrote it, but I left it generic because I really couldn't make my mind up! :)

Ah, yes. The resistance to modern technology...

Very funny!

Actually, I do read books on my netbook, and I have a Zen player which I am attached to most of the time.

I however refuse to either Twitter or Facebook... I have a good cell phone which I only use for phone calls. And most of the time it's off. I answer the phone all day. When I get home or when I'm in transit, I only want to answer calls or make calls if I have to.

Glad it amused :)

Technology does seem to take over some times, doesn't it?

If it's shiny and new Methos has to try it :0). Move with the times or get left behind.

*giggles at the 'mechanising the mills' line far too much*

Short and sweet - love it! (but I'm never never swapping a book for anything electronic, dagnabbit. /old-skool librarian *g*)
Feonixriftfeonixrift on December 3rd, 2009 06:06 am (UTC)
Ah, but it's not about swapping - it's about duplicating.

There's the two on the shelves (one to loan out), the one on the hard drive, the one on the backup disk, the one on the ebook reader, the one recorded with the store it was downloaded from (if bought) or on the online archive (if free)...

Heehee... Love how Duncan, born in the 'modern' ages compared to Methos, still can't get technology... though of course it *would* be Methos who learns quickly about such things!

also, I laughed out loud when Methos mentioned the StarTrek Padds - because that's *exactly* what I thought when I first saw these reader thingies on tv.
and I want one too...
But, I don't want to be a pie,: painty methosidontlikegravy on December 4th, 2009 10:58 pm (UTC)
Oh you have no idea about how badly I want one. I keep making trips to my local bookstore just to gaze longingly at the Sony Readers. :-D

And I love how stuff that was fiction in Star Trek has inspired people to develop the tech - the digital frame is another gadget that just makes me think "We're living in the future!" *grin*

Funny! Love how the 'old dog' is the one learning new tricks faster. And now I have to look up that Luddite comment.

*cackles*

He so would drag Mac kicking and screaming into using modern technology.
