Sensible review of Utopia
Okay, so I've managed to scrape my brain up off the floor and reinsert it and five hours of pricing sale items has left me gagging to write something intelligent, so hopefully this will be slightly more coherent than last night. Once again this is spoilerific, so I'll put it behind the cut:

I had guessed that Rose was the reason for Jack's immortality, although I had hoped for a slightly different explanation *grin*. I was concerned that if it was given by the TARDIS it could be taken by the TARDIS so I'm very glad to hear it can't be taken from him. Torchwood might have been a bit crap otherwise. I had also rather hoped that he'd arrived a little earlier than 1869 so that he was nearly as old/as old/older than the Doctor, but that's just me. :)

The interaction between all the characters was great, especially the Rose related dialogue, but then that's what we've come to expect from RTD isn't it?

Explanation for the Doctor leaving Jack was very good, I thought it fit well with the story and the characters. I was a bit pissed off that the beginning didn’t match the end of TW, but the ep was so good that little flaws like that could be ignored.

Speaking of flaws, the plot was thin and the 'futurekind' has been done before. The plot weakness was probably because the whole is divided into 3 eps and RTD tends to allow plot to evaporate when he’s focussed on characters. (Just look at Queer as Folk).

jadesfire2808made an excellent comment on her LJ - not nice doesn’t mean not good. You need to occasionally go *sharp intake of breath* or shout at the telly: “You bastard!” or “OMG he’s the Master! Don’t open the watch! Doctor RUN! Forget the ship, get your arse up to the TARDIS before the Master nicks it you wanker!” Or was that just me?

I'm going to leave it now, before I get too in-depth in my analysis, but I've got enough that I could write an undergraduate essay on its merits and underlying meaning and pitfalls.

All in all I loved it enough to overlook any shortcomings and I can't wait to watch the rest play out. In fact I really wish I had access to time travel so I could pop ahead a week and watch it now.

This makes me laugh so much. :D It was a bit hard for me to yell any of the above though, given my parents were in the same room. The most I managed was, "oh, I bet he's going to regenerate into John Simm!" - thereby ruining the surprise for them...

Oops! :D

I myself studiously avoid anything spoilerish so I was completely in the dark about what was going to happen. I'm just one of those people who hates to know what's going to happen next. My sister is the opposite which leads to conversations along the lines of:
'Ooh it says on the internet..'
'Shut up. I don't want to know.'
'Yeah, but oh! The Doctor and Jack...'
'La la la! I'm not listening!'

lol it didn't come much before it happened really.:D

It's not quite the same but I have similar conversations with my sister ~ usually something like
"I saw this film ___ and ..."
"I don't care. If I wanted to know what happened, I would have watched it."
"Anyway, what happened was..."

and it happens every time she either goes to the cinema or watches something on tv that I don't! People probably think I watch too many films just because of 'conversations' like that.:D

You mean it wasn't just me...Heeeeeeeeee. I was squeeing incredibly loud and was all 'WTF? OH NO he's the Master! Everyone on that spaceship is going to die!!!AHHHH!'. Oh and occasional 'Oh Jack, you loveable manwhore.' *headhand* *waits for all the Jack/Martha fics to come out* Reference to TW with the CPR and 'proper CPR'...Yessss.

Yeah I was yelling at the tv and can't wait for next week. I really didn't care for the plot just happy for Jack to be back.
