Harry Potter OoTP
So I went to watch HP on Friday and I was actually kinda disappointed.  The first two hours were very well done, the characters were spot on, the narrative flowed well and the cuts didn't seem to matter.

The kids had finally garnered the acting chops to stand up to being in a scene with the likes of Ralph Fiennes or Gary Oldman and not look like complete amateurs. Especially Daniel Radcliffe, who I thought was excellent, expecially the little head movement he had going every time he was connected to Voldemort, that was genuinely creepy.

But then came the fight at the ministry. It felt rushed, and for the first time since sitting in that cinema I started to think "But what about...?" as the parts that had been removed became glaringly and annoyingly obvious. Most irritating was that I had watched a 'making of' a few days earlier and on that they showed Sirius and Bellatrix duelling. I was really looking forward to it, so I sat on the edge of my seat as I watched Harry and Sirius fight Lucius, then Bellatrix appeared and....Sirius fell through the arch. Where was the duelling? Where was the taunting between cousins? The buggers cut it out!!

The climactic battle at the ministry lasted all of twenty minutes. I felt cheated somehow, perhaps because what had precedeeded had been so good.

So my sister and I watched it again this morning, and actually I enjoyed it much more this time. I was able to spot action happening in the background I hadn't noticed the first time and the end felt more satisfying. I was also really pleased that the director has taken on board the criticism that the kids were out of uniform too much in 4 so that they spend the majority of this one in uniform and their robes have made a reappearance.

There was still a bit too much wordless magic, especially from Harry, which could make things awkward for continuity seeing as he has trouble mastering it in book 6, but it's something that can be overlooked.
All in all I think this is the best film so far and I loved it. Just compartmentalise the films as a separate entity from the books.

That *was* creepy, wasn't it? But its a good point - they fit in a lot more this movie. Definately getting better.

It sounds like the dueling scene between Belletrix and Sirius was awesome and I don't understand why they cut it out, unless they were rushing for time. Hopefully it'll be on the DVD.

Glad you enjoyed it more the second time around, though, as that bodes well for me. My parents are going someone this week and I'm trying to think of ways to get them to invite me ;-)

... okay so: I have a question thats not in regards to your post. Do you beta fanfic? Because I wrote something this morning (at work, *sigh* I'm a horrible person) and I'd like someone to look it over. No one's ever really beta'd my stories, and they've gotten good reviews, but this one is a little more complex and darker than my others (the total number of which is an astonishing two, so yeah: big streak I'm breaking) and I really think it needs a looking at. What do you think?

Oh shoot, sorry: maybe I should give some kind of detail. It's SGA and McShep, so obviously you'd have to like that pairing to read this. And there's a little bad-language, in case that's a squick.
But, I don't want to be a pie,: jelly babyidontlikegravy on July 16th, 2007 09:15 pm (UTC)
Yeah I beta, and I'm familiar with SGA and I have no issues with McShep whatsoever. I've only seen season 1 and the first 3 of season 2 tho so warn me of any spoilers (not that I mind cos I'll forget again by the time I actually get to watch it).
As for bad language? I'm with Stephen Fry on this one, there is no such thing as bad language, only language. :)
I'd be happy to give it a look, you can send it to my email at yahoo dot co dot uk. Its the same username.

Shoot - there *are* spoilers for season three: it's set after the mid-season hiatus; do you still want to read it or is that too spoiler-y?

(which can totally be a word. :D)

LOL

That's okay, like I said it will be a long time before I actually get to see it and I'm a bit like Dory from Finding Nemo in the memory department (just keep swimming, just keep swimming). Also I cant afford to get the DVDs often so I have really long gaps between watching so I love reading fic to fill in the waiting. *g*

Just write me a note to bring me up to speed and I'll be happy to read it. It's really up to you, if you'd rather have someone who's up to date then pick someone else, that's fine too. :)

The only real spoilers you need to know is that for the mid-season three break some Ancients returned and kicked everyone out of Atlantis ... then they came back to help them out six weeks later. All the Ancients are dead (due to bad-guys) and our team is left with the city.

Okay, I've posted it here:

No huge rush on this, but feel free to whip out the red pen :)
