HL50 Prompt - Quickening
Summary: A sort of sequel to Beauty and the Beast, Richie faces Melissa's husband...

The Beast Within

The sun was just tipping over the horizon as the two Immortals met.

“You know we don’t have to do this,” Richie said.

“Oh but you know we do.”

Richie nodded grimly and pulled out his sword.

“Richard Ryan,” he said, saluting with his blade.

“Ah yes, there was no time for formalities yesterday. Duquesne, Robert Duquesne.”

He returned Richie’s salute with a short, formal bow, and the fight began.

Duquesne’s size gave him the advantage in height and weight, but Richie was faster. He was able to dodge most of the blows, but Richie knew he couldn’t keep that up for long, and from the blows that did connect he knew he wouldn’t last under such a punishing assault. He slipped on the dew-soaked grass and went down, but luckily he had the presence of mind to hang on to his sword and roll away from Duquesne’s next blow. He found himself behind Duquesne for a second, so he brought his sword up and slashed across the back of Duquesne’s legs. The ploy worked and Duquesne dropped to his knees, screaming in pain as blood poured from the gash across his calves. Swiftly, Richie stood up and delivered the final blow.

He turned around so he wouldn’t need to stare at the body. Even during the time after Mac had tried to kill him he had never enjoyed killing, and since he had met ‘Methos’ his distaste for it had returned.

The Quickening filled his senses as the essence of Robert Duquesne forced itself into his body. He screamed, but not just at the pain. As the memories entered him, he saw Duquesne beating Melissa and countless other wives and lovers before her. He tasted the twisted mixture of desire and jealousy as Duquesne abused and raped slaves on his plantation, some of them still only girls. The casual cruelty turned Duquesne on and that sickened Richie.

Finally the Quickening subsided and Richie sank to his knees, grateful that Duquesne’s personality was already fading, being absorbed by his own. He glanced behind him at the body, anger clear in his eyes. He might not enjoy killing, but he was glad the bastard was dead.

Nice job! I like knowing Richie's thoughts both during and after the fight and quickening.

You know, I just have to think that some quickenings would require a very long shower afterwards to try and wipe off the mental filth.

Well in all fairness I did write most of my Highlander 50 table before you started reading my fic!

I'm glad you're reading them now actually because it's shown to me the clear need to go back and edit these earlier fics so they're more readable. Yikes!
