I would like to know...
Who has the worst on screen Irish accent?

I know many will leap to Brad Pitt, but my personal vote is for Sheena Easton in the Highlander episode An Eye for an Eye.

Any other contenders?

[laughs] Sheena's was pretty bad, but I think Heroes had a few humdingers - mainly because most of the characters were supposed to be from Cork and yet had strong 'Northern' accents. It's US equivalent of having someone with a strong Texan accent pretending to be from Maine, or someone with a Yorkshire burr, pretending to be from the east end!

So bad, it was cringe inducing.

But what's really hilarious is that now there are a few Irish actors in popular shows with their real accents, and I read people on comms going What kind of accent is that?

Morgana, in Merlin would be prime example of that! People are so used to hearing the 'Hollywood Oirish' acent on the telly, they don't know the real thing when they hear it!

Ah, I'd given up on Heroes by that point.

I guess I'm lucky that Welsh accents don't get mangled quite so often, although there have been one or two. Usually by Welsh actors who've learnt to speak RP English to get on in acting and forgotten how to 'do' a Welsh one!

I know it's not important in the grand scheme of things, but lets face it, sometimes it's painful to hear when someone gets any accent wrong!

[grins] there are a lot of older Irish actors what went down the same route. Peter O'Toole immediately comes to mind, and you'd have to listen pretty hard to pick up Pierce Brosnan's brogue! The Welsh accent is rather magnificently distinctive, while I've been told that an Irish accent is hard to get right. Johnny Depp does a good one, though (but it's Johnny Depp, he who can do no wrong :-P)

I like to think myself pretty good at accents, and I must confess that Irish is one that I can't get right. Although thanks to the bastardised Welsh/Dorset/Scouse accent that I have now, people have asked if I'm Irish (or Brummie, South African, or Australian)!

but it's Johnny Depp, he who can do no wrong

Not going to disagree there. I'd watch him read the phone book aloud. :p

I can only get an Irish accent right if I'm talking to someone Irish! If I try to 'do' one it wanders around all over the place from north to south via Dublin!

I'm not going to argue about Johnny Depp either. *g*

A tad off-topic
I would like to submit Anthony Hopkins as the worst Kiwi accent (World's Fastest Indian). He sounded like the bastard Welsh cross of an Australian turtle.

(of course, his Spanish/Mexican accent in Zorro was *cough* amazing too...)

I definitely vote for casting actors proficient in the appropriate accent - whether by training or heritage - rather than just talent. Seriously. Talent is good, but can be COMPLETELY UNDONE by a clanger of an accent. Or maybe I'm just an accent nazi as well as a grammar and boob nazi :)

ROTFLMAO Seriously, can you hear me from your house?!

And you're a boob nazi are you? *snerk*

Sorry.

Anyhoo, I've not actually seen said film so can't comment, but yeah Sir Tony isn't too good on the accent front (as much as I love and adore him). Even Hannibal Lector sounded like he came via the Valleys in a few places *grin*

And let's not even get started on Sir Sean...

Suddenly I'm reminded of Eddie Izzard's war movie bit. "Don't go, Daddy, Don't go"

"I must, it's my duty as a cockney and as an Englishman."

Course, if you don't know that one, that won't be funny...

Yeah, that is fairly atrocious. You'd have thought being around Doyle for a season might have helped!

I'm pretty happy with it. One of my favourite movie scenes.

I remember people railing on his accent! "It's so horrible! It doesn't sound at all authentic!" I'm like, "Do you idiots know he's actually Irish??"

BINGO! That was like...I needed bleach for my ears.

And Brad Pitt speaking Pikey in Snatch? That was brilliant.

Brad with just about any accent is fairly atrocious, bless him.
Deaniedeaniebtvs on March 19th, 2009 12:30 am (UTC)
I'd agree with that. His accent was horrible (especially if you compare it to the excellent on-screen British accents done by James Marsters and Alexis Denisof).

I actually had a huge shock when I discovered Alexis Denisof wasn't British. And hearing him with an American one in Highlander was just weird.
