Two little ficlets
I wrote these for bringthehappy, and I thought I'd share the happy with you too. None of it belongs to me at all, I'm just trying to raise a smile. The first is Discworld, the second Highlander/NCIS.

Prompt No.1:

Vimes didn’t want to come to Uberwald, and he certainly didn’t want to bring Young Sam with him, and he most definitely did not want to bring Young Sam to Uberwald in the depths of winter. Yet here they both were. He was here because Lord Vetinari had asked him, in that way he had that very firmly meant he was ordered to go. Vetinari had insisted that as Ambassador for Ankh Morpork, it was his duty to attend some ball or other. Vimes hadn’t exactly paid much attention beyond ‘Uberwald’ and ‘go now’.

Young Sam’s presence was an unavoidable problem – Sybil had gone to stay with a cousin in the country (she had been unclear on the specific location, apparently feeling ‘the country’ sufficed) who was suffering from ‘women’s troubles’ (again unspecified), leaving Sam senior holding the toddler.

As the carriage rattled along the winding mountain pass, Young Sam stared avidly out the window at the scenery rushing past until he pointed out of the window and exclaimed,

“Wha’s at?!”

Sam looked out the window and followed his son’s finger to the peak of the mountains. For a horrible moment he thought Young Sam had spotted marauding trolls, or bandits of some kind, but he saw nothing. Suddenly, he realised that Sam was looking at the snow-capped peaks.

“It’s snow,” he said.

“Sno,” Young Sam repeated and beamed delightedly.

Several hours later, Commander Vimes of the Ankh Morpork Watch had a very cold nose and cheeks that were bright red and burning. He couldn’t even feel his fingers or toes anymore and he sorely wished he’d brought gloves and stouter boots. But as he stood back and admired his handiwork, Young Sam clapped in delight at the sight of his very first snowman.

On balance, Vimes decided, it was worth it.

Prompt No.2:

Ducky looked around the room, scanning the party guests for a familiar face, until his eyes locked with those of an attractive young blonde. He crossed the room, a large smile on his face.

“Amanda,” he purred.

“Donald,” Amanda replied with genuine pleasure and a smile that mirrored his.

Scotland, 1966

Amanda looked around the room, scanning the party guests for a familiar face, until her eyes locked with those of an attractive young blonde. She crossed the room, a large smile on her face.

“Donald,” she purred.

“Amanda!” Ducky replied with genuine pleasure and a smile that mirrored hers.

“Last time we met, I was the younger,” Ducky said with a grin as he handed her a glass of wine.

“You still are,” Amanda replied. She leaned in and kissed him.

“Oh, well, indeed!” Ducky blushed a little, suddenly a little flustered. Despite their shared past, it had been quite some time since such an attractive woman had made advances. And although he knew her true age, he also knew that everyone in the room only saw a young woman kissing the mature pathologist.

“Let’s get out of here,” Amanda suggested, nodding her head in the direction of the door. Ducky just nodded and they began maneuvering their way from the room.

When they reached the hall, Amanda slipped into the cloakroom to fetch her coat, leaving Ducky for a moment. Tony sidled up to him and leaned in conspiratorially.

“She’s a niece, right? A really affectionate niece,” he said. Ducky tutted.

“Anthony, I’m not dead yet, you know.”

Aww, Anthony that is soo unlike you.
Someone should point out to Tony that his reaction should be 'You old' something or other and "go for it" to Ducky. He should be happy that Ducky is still seeing/getting action at his age.

Also loved the one with the father building snowmen with his kid. I so have to start reading DiscWorld. (I read a book with Death taking a holiday once. I so need to reread that. It was funny.)

Yes, you really should. I think it should be a universal law that everyone should read at least one Discworld book in their life. ;-)

Enjoyed both completely:). We're having a rerun of NCIS these days, Ducky is sure my second favorite right now:).

Glad you liked :)

I actually started watching the show because I love Michael Weatherly from Dark Angel and I have a huge crush on David McCallum from watching Man from UNCLE reruns. That line in 'Meat Puzzle' when Kate asks Gibbs what Ducky looked like when he was younger, and Gibbs replies 'Ilya Kuriakin' is a real squee moment for me :)

I started watch NCIS because they started show it when run out of bought CSI eps:). Had to say I've never seen any of the actors before, but I guess that's unsurprising:). But it sure was fun to see David in one eps of "Murder, she wrote" (well, nearly everyone was a guest star in that show:)) and Mark Harmon in "For all time" was brilliant:).

I love both of these! There's something wonderful about kids and snow - add Vimes to that and you've got a winner. Unsurprisingly my fave is the Amanda/Ducky one, not least because it was my prompt! I adore Ducky's put down at the end.

Thank you!

I'm a big kid when it comes to snow, just the mention of the word gets me grinning like an idiot. And Vimes is such a big softy when it comes to Young Sam that the fic just wrote itself :)

I should have guessed it was your prompt. Well, I'm very happy that you like it, and I hope it did bring the happy.

OMG I love the idea of a Ducky/Amanda hook up and the exchange with Tony at the end - perfect

aw, the hardened Commander Vimes building a snowman for his son! loved it! the last Discworld book I read was The Night Watch, which was the birth of Sam, I believe (among other things). Vimes is definitely my favourite character (after Death, because how can anyone *not* love Death?).

and the NCIS one made me chuckle. Amanda and Ducky? go Ducky!

Got me. *grin*

Vimes is a big old softy with Young Sam and it was nice to be able to write that side of him.I honestly don't think I can pick a favourite character after Death though, I love Vimes and Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg and Vetinari and Carrot and Angua and Susan and Rincewind and...well you get the idea!
