Happy Birthday Ithildyn
Many happy returns Ith, here's a little White Collar ficlet just for you, with love.

Disclaimer: Not mine in any way shape or form. Also, it's my first time writing White Collar.

A/N:I've only seen season 1 of White Collar so nothing spoilery as long as you've seen an episode. Highlander crossover if you squint ;-p

Peter rubbed the bridge of his nose to clear his vision, but the file on his desk continued to read the same. He hated thinking the worst of Caffrey but this theft had his hallmarks all over it and the building was only a few blocks away, well within Neal’s limit.

He looked up to see the man in question heading toward his office, so Peter got up and headed out to intercept him. At the questioning look on Neal’s face Peter smiled.

“We’re expected at a crime scene, I’ll explain on the way,” he said and ushered Caffrey toward the door.

It was a chilly winter day, but they walked the couple of blocks, Peter taking the time to show Neal the file and fill him in on the details. He watched Neal’s face intently; although Caffrey had an excellent poker face, Peter liked to think he’d got quite good at reading him. He was reasonably certain his surprise was genuine; but there was another emotion there, perhaps recognition, so if Neal didn’t commit the crime then he thought he knew who did.

“You think it was me?” Neal asked.

“Tell me it wasn’t,” Peter replied as they waited to cross the street.

“I’m shocked you would even thing such a thing,” Neal replied, although his cheeky grin belied his indignant tone. The crosswalk sign changed and they started walking again. “Actually, I’m a little flattered that you would mistake her work for mine,” Neal added. Peter raised an eyebrow.

“Amanda Montrose,” Neal answered as they reached their destination.

Peter groaned and paused with his hand on the door handle.

“Not her, not in my jurisdiction, please,” he said to whatever gods may be paying attention. Neal chuckled. “It’s not funny Neal. The FBI, Interpol and just about every agency and police department in the world have been after that woman for twenty years. She’s an enigma, a myth, a damn will ‘o' the wisp.”

“And happens to be a good friend of mine,” Neal said with a smile and Peter could practically hear the quotation marks around “good friend”. “Good luck catching up with her, she’ll be halfway around the world by now.”

Peter sighed and pulled the door open. It was obviously going to be one of those days.
