Firefly/Merlin crossover 1/1
Written for Day four of consci_fan_mo and for silvercobwebs who is most Evol for suggesting this.

Slight Spoilers for season three of Merlin.

In Dreams

There are nights during the war when Mal Reynolds is so exhausted that he falls into deep slumber. When he does, his dreams are strange and often violent.

In his dreams, he is a fighter, wandering from town to town, picking fights in bars. It is a lot like his real life, except that in his dreams he carries a sword instead of a gun.

When he wakes, Mal quickly shakes the dreams from his head, but for a short while they feel real and he wonders if they are not dreams but memories from another life half-forgotten.

There is something about them that feels like coming home. But he is not a praying man, not one to believe in an afterlife, he does not let them trouble him. Mostly life is too busy for idle thoughts to possess him for too long, and Mal forgets the dreams for a while.

When River arrives on Serenity the dreams return with force, new dreams that are stronger and more real than ever. Now he knows with certainty that in them he is on Earth-That-Was. His life in the dreams has changed. He no longer roams; he calls a shining white citadel his home and he gives allegiance to a noble leader, a fair-haired man who he has fought shoulder to shoulder with. Mal knows without doubt he would die for this man. He has finally found something and someone to believe in.

When he wakes that morning, alone in the Black in his bunk, Mal feels the weight of the ‘verse on him and he sobs for an hour.

One day, River comes up to him when they are alone in the galley. He’s eating and she drops into the chair opposite with her usual feline grace. She smiles widely, a gesture at odds with the serious look in her eyes.

“Something on your mind, Little Albatross?” Mal asks with a mouth still full of food.

“Been reading,” she replies and pushes forward the book that Mal realises she was holding. He glances at it; it’s old, presumably one of Simon’s, and knowing the good doctor probably worth a small fortune.

The title is in some old language that Mal doesn’t recognise but he tries to pronounce it anyway.

“More-ter der Arthur? Never been much of one for books,” he says. She smiles again and pushes it further toward him.

“You should try this one, might help you sleep better,” she says.

Mal is too stunned to speak as she gets up and starts toward the cockpit. He should be used to her ways of seeing by now, but it still creeps him out more often than not. As she passes him she leans in to whisper in his ear.

“You’ll be better when you know who you are, Gwaine.”

Ooh! Mal as Gwaine works, and of course River would realise who he was before Mal did! Good stuff.

Thank you, glad it works, but silvercobwebs deserves all blame/credit for the idea, I just ran with it. :)
