Highlander the Source
So, thanks to ithidrialI was finally able to watch the Source, and here are my thoughts
I can only presume that Russia was a test audience and the film tanked. Hence the lack of big screen release and the endless ‘editing’ that’s delayed the release everywhere else.
What was with the Quickening? All the effects in fact. They were better in the first film! The editing reminded me of a bad video game. Just watching it gave me a migraine. Yeesh.
Er, I thought Methos was the oldest Immortal? I mean fair enough, there might be older ones lurking somewhere, but nobody even bothers to comment on it at any point. And how come Methos, Mr. ‘I predate Christianity’ is on a holy quest and Duncan and Joe don’t even question it? WTF?
Joe’s death? I can’t even begin to comment on how awful that was. I’ll just say *gah* and leave it that.
The montage was pretty dire too. It felt like someone had cut n pasted half of the movie because they were desperate to keep the running time under 90mins.
It’s like someone had a ‘Highlander movie by numbers’ book:
1. A Highlander - check
2. incomprehensible plot – check
3. loss of someone important to Highlander – check
4. lots of sword fights – check
5. ridiculous and insane bad guy with a silly voice – check
6. Queen – ooh bugger, quick chuck in some Queen somewhere!
They were all so OOC. Duncan was the cynic? Methos actually wanted to seek out a mystical ‘Source’? At points I could actually hear Methos in my head laughing and sniping at Methos on the screen. Especially when he went all noble at the end. Are we supposed to think he’s dead? Someone needs to MST3K this film. That’s if they can bear to sit through it again.
“He’s the one.”? I repeat a resounding *gah*
Does anyone have any Retcon so I can wipe it from my mind? I mean seriously, I’m not Immortal, I demand that hour and a half of my life back. Any ideas who I should write to?
*Toddles off to watch some of the Series to push the horror away*
This week I am mostly feeling: crankycranky
She went that-a-way...: Joe is mortaljinxed_wood on August 8th, 2007 12:57 am (UTC)
I kinda like Zai and Reggie, though...so they both promptly got killed off, of couse....

I despised the ending, I was resigned to the fact that Joe died until i saw it and my first thought was: "Wait, Joe died so that Duncan could get his wife pregnant? What about the fact the world is falling apart and you were supposed to be finding a way to stop it happening? Stop having glowy sex with the ditzy mortal, you idiot, and go off and get a plot so that Joe's death would have some actual meaning!"

That's a really good point, I was too p***ed off by everything else last night, but it does make Joe's death completely senseless. Wow, I've reached new levels of infuriation I did not think possible.

I presume the point is that their son will save the world, but that's a bit crap cos everyone might have imploded by the time he's born, let alone grown up enough to save the world.

It was just wall to wall cliche, hackneyed dialogue and plot devices and stock in trade characters.

It felt to me like someone had offered Adrian a role in a sci-fi movie and he (or someone else I don't wish to lay blame at his door) thought 'hey if we swap these characters for Duncan Methos and Joe, make these guys Immortals and tweak the dialogue a little we'd have another Highlander movie'.

I don't think I have ever been so disappointed by a film. I don't think I'm alone in saying that The Source will not be entering my canon.

I quite liked Zai and Reggie too. The characters deserve something better don't they?

Hmm... *ponders writing them a fic*

Makes me glad I haven't seen it, and strengthens my wish not to! I'll stick with the 1st film, the series and the fanfic...

That sounds like an excellent course of action. Damn my curiosity!

I'm still in bewilderment that Methos would ride off into the night *without* picking his sword out of the tree. I mean, does the prospect of Mac's mystical babies render everyone a suicidal idiot?
Heh, and that's just a minor quibble!
(Oh egads, the music? What the hell did they do to Queen?!)

I know! Freddie must be doing bloody somersaults in his grave. The shame.

It all makes perfect sense now. I think I want to have your baby (but not in a Immortal glowy kinda way). ;-)

Failing that, mind if I friend you?

Gosh, I don't know what to think of the movie now... Is Methos alive at the end? Obviously it seems Joe os not. It will be on here in Sept. on Sci-Fi. I am compelled to watch if only to see the guys as D&M one last time.

I am inclined to believe that your review was way more entertaining than The Movie That Must Not Be Named. I am very happy I haven't seen it, too. I think I will avoid seeing it at any cost. That way I can pretend it does not exist and it cannot f*** up my canon. Geez, you think they tortured the actors into participating?

It's the only explanation I can think of. Or they got paid a s***load of money, which would explain why there was nothing left for the FX!
